Using one ephemeral message of 17 lines of type, the first 7 exercises are highly regimented explorations of typographic variables in isolation and then in combinations to understand how these variables affect the transmission of a message. The variables can distinguish kinds of information, reveal hierarchical emphasis (primary, secondary and tertiary information), and clarify associated information. The typographic variables are: linespace, weight, and horizontal shifting.

In the last 3 exercises, the order of the text can be changed, the variable of size is introduced, and typographic rules (lines) are explored. Attention to language, meaning and detail are emphasized.
