Submission info for FJORG! 2009 32-hour animation competition at SIGGRAPH
(4/2/09)

The call for submissions is now open for the 2009 FJORG! animation competition which takes place at SIGGRAPH this year. The event is a 32-hour animation challenge which pits teams of animators against one another for the glory of all Valhalla...or at least the animation community at large. The first two years of this event has seen participation from 4 RIT teams in total (2 per year) so we really want to keep this growing tradition alive. Teams will eat, sleep, and drink animation for 32 hours straight while living in an enclosed area at the SIGGRAPH convention hall. It's a great opportunity to meet bigwigs in the industry as they walk around the area to see your progress while the competition unfolds. Directors and animators from large studios as well as independent animators all come together to give the teams advice as they animate their fingers off. There's also tons of entertainment which for both years of the competition included Buddhist monks hitting each other with bamboo sticks.

Each team is made up of three animators so you'll have to get your friends together for this as the reel submission will be by the team. There is also a pot luck singular submission system where they choose three people and stick them together as a team. It is a $30 dollar submission fee per team submission which isn't that bad considering it will be split up between the three in the team.

At the end of the event, the animations are screened to the entire SIGGRAPH audience at a public event. Also SIGGRAPH is being held in New Orleans this year so that's another added perk. Prizes for the first, second, and third place teams are pretty swank (including a trip to a major studio for a tour and lunch). All teams accepted into the competition get a couple bags of goodies though. In a nutshell, it's worth entering. Here's a link to all the info.

http://www.siggraph.org/s2009/submissions/fjorg/index.php

The deadline for submission is May 6th.

If you are interested in entering FJORG! this year, please let me know. I'll put together a meeting so details can be discussed. You can contact me at fpwppr@rit.edu.

Real Ideas Studio Microgrants- Call for Applications!
(2/18/09)

Real Ideas Studio (RIS) seeks emerging filmmakers for its global Microgrants Program. RIS is offering $500 to produce films originating from different regions of the world. The finished films will have a screening at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. Films must be completed fully within the grant period and amount by May 01, 2009. RIS will be designated as the Production company of the film, and an RIS mentor will advise the film and be credited as a Producer of the project.

Real Ideas Studio (RIS) produces films that explore significant perspectives and reflect the culture in which they are made. Films that approach international, local, and/or regional viewpoints are encouraged. Our films consider actuality over fiction and are therefore more documentary in nature; however, we encourage the limits of dramatic and visual creativity within this genre.

Our grant amount is flat, and films are expected to be around five minutes in total length. Real Ideas Studio is a global collaborative that mentors creative arts programs within culturally-diverse environments. The program has run filmmaking programs at the last three Cannes Film Festivals, and we most recently completed a very successful filmmaking program at the 2009 Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, during the Sundance Film Festival.

Portable Film Festival and Lonely Planet TV - Call for Entries!
(2/18/09)

1 February - 30 April 2009

Wanna play cinematic tour guide?

We want you to show us around a place that means something to you – whether it be the place of your birth, or where to get the best greasy late night hamburger in town; somewhere far away and exotic, or something down home and personal, there's a story everywhere you go. And we wanna hear you tell yours!

Portable Film Festival and Lonely Planet TV are proud to present Worldwide Encounters, a film event designed to take the world to the worldwide web, as we scour the atlas for the best in globetrotting filmmaking...

Here's what we suggest: create a destination video, and tell us creatively about the story of a place; it could be anything - the people there, your travels through it, what you love about it, what you remember about it. You can film yourself dancing through the streets or getting into fights with locals, but you've gotta capture the character of the place, and what makes it great...

What we don't want is the lazy kind of lounge travelogue videos that your relatives might use to inflict the summer cruises of their twilight years onto your family at large. What we do want are films that are creative; that are personal, and that observe things with their own unique sensibility...

There are major cash prizes up for grabs, including $1000 for the grand prize winner, $750 for the audience favourite, and a host of smaller cash prizes and Lonely Planet travel guides for the runners up, care of those lovely folks at Lonely Planet!

You've got until April 30th, 2009 to get us your film. We'll announce the finalists and present them on Portable Film Festival in the month of June, where our judges will make their decision, and our audiences will make theirs...

So, hit the road and make us a movie about what you find!

For more info, check out www.portablefilmfestival.com/projects.php,

or email us at info@portablefilmfestival.com!

    (12/18/08)

    Dear Filmmaker:

If you haven't already, we would like to encourage you to submit your work this year to the Rochester High Falls International Film Festival in both the feature-length and shorts categories! Not only is the feature-length call new for us this year, but the shorts program has gone back to the umbrella of the High Falls Film Festival, after a one-year management of the programming by our good friends at Movies on a Shoestring.

The requirements for the various sections of the Festival can be found at our website at: rochestermoviefest.com/web/?page_id=25.

Any questions, please feel free to write! We look forward to seeing your work this year, and wish you, as always, all the best on your continued
