Places Left Behind Idea

October 17th, 2007

The Basis:
Nowadays it seems as though people move way more often then they
did in the past. I believe the average American moves roughly five
times throughout their life. In undergoing these living situation changes
we gain both positive and negative memories of the area.

The Concept:
The thought process behind the site will correlate in some respects to
the idea of how families track the progress of their children’s height on
doors or walls within the houses they live. However for this site I want
to create a place that allows users to come and share memories, pictures
and learn the status of the places that they left behind. Instead of
tracking family progression one could now track the history of the
residence in which they used to reside.

Return Value:
Users are encouraged to return to the site after every move they
undertake to add their new living arrangements to their existing profiles.
A status indicator will be displayed on the main page showing a list of
the top twenty people who have moved the most. Not that I necessarily
want to promote people to move, but I thought it would make for an
interesting indicator. Also, the curiosity factor of what has happened to
the place they once lived hopefully will drive users to return to the site.

Spread:
In order to promote the spread of this site I will include an area that
allows users to both inform friends and to reach out to the people who
now live in the place where the user once lived. To get in touch with
the current resident the user would be able to create a printable post
card that could be sent through the mail to the new residents address.
The postcard could include an image showing the house or a room
within the house with a user created caption and a area that includes
details that inform the postcard recipient about the website. This would
hopefully generate enough interest in the recipient to go to the site and
see what it’s all about and potentially starting the process all over again.
The downside of this is that it would rely heavily on the user to actively
partake in this process and fork out the price of a stamp. An idea to
overcome this would possibly be some kind of stamp credit system that
if the user added enough content to the site they would be rewarded by
getting compensation for the stamps. Unfortunately, being a poor
college student I will probably not include this feature, but if the site
was to become successful enough with out the system in place the cost
could always be offset with some form of on site advertising.

Interactive Marketing

October 3rd, 2007

Interactive marketing is comprised of a variety of different marketing strategies. The most popular are viral marketing, mobile marketing, email marketing and website campaigns. The primary goal behind most of these is to pull users into an interactive experience that will engage them long enough to promote the brand or product the campaign was created around. A multitude of tools can be used to achieve this desired interaction. Online games, short videos, message boards, rating systems and many other tools can be found commonly used to create this type of interactive marketing.

The effectiveness of this type of marketing can vary greatly depending on how it’s implemented. Often if the creators of the experience can trigger an emotion a much more lasting relationship will be created. Durex used humor, sex and shock value with its “The Pants Whisperer” campaign (http://www.thepantswhisperer.com). The combination of humorous interactive elements engaged the user while the logo at the top constantly reaffirmed the brand. I feel this campaign was successful and the company not only managed to entertain consumers, but also increased brand recognition.

The current trend of using peel/twist off codes that fast food companies seem to be currently obsessed with is one area that I find very annoying. I remember when if I decided to get a grossly oversized amount of fries I could simply peel whatever promotional game piece from the container and have the instant gratification of knowing whether I won or not. Now the only option, if my curiosity overwhelms me, is to go to their website and give up most of my personal information before I can finally enter my stupid code. I disagree with this approach and feel that trying to pull information out of their consumers seems somewhat unethical to me, but I wouldn’t mind it so much if I actually won a free car or something every once and awhile.

I can’t imagine interactive marketing disappearing anytime soon and believe that it will continue to grow more and more over the years. In the future I think there will be an increased emphasis on involving more of our senses. The greater involvement will add to the overall experience creating a more lasting impact on the user.

Going Green Project Outline

September 7th, 2007

I decided that for this first project I want to create a site that allows users to help the environment and their communities. Users will upload images of areas that are in need of restoration along with details about their plan of action in hope of gaining additional support. Users who are interested in participating in the projects will have the ability to leave comments and questions for the event planner. Afterwards the user can post images of the area after it has been restored.

The basic design of the site will start as a map of New York, possibly expanding in the future. Projects will be marked on the map with a clickable leaf icon from which they can access further details. The cities that have the highest level of participation (the most leaves) will be put on a top five list in order to encourage participation.
