DA Ink. Case Study:

The Problem:
The challenge our group was given was to create a mini site for the Friends of Ganondagan webpage. Ganondagan is located in Victor, New York and serves as the site for a Native American Community for the Seneca people. We were given free range of the webpage and were able to choose what aspect of the webpage we would like to create. The mini site needed to be educational and professional, while provoking the user to return to the site, and gain interest in visiting Ganondagan.

The Solution:
Our solution was to create a Story Teller site that would relate the oral traditions of the Seneca people. We really wanted to have a traditional feel with some creativity to attract our younger audience. Our group got together and researched the story telling traditions and talked to the Friends of Ganondagan, they were kind enough to set us up with a traditional story teller; Micheal Galban. Eventually we had a firm idea to present the oral stories on our mini site as a book with animations of the story to go along.

Our final product is an animated site that the user can go through and select which stories they want to hear. They can also adjust the volume to three different levels and even mute the sound if they are in a situation where they cannot have sound. Once the user is listening/reading a story there are animations relating to the story to add interest. The user can also go along at their own pace by having the ability to turn the page via a rollover at their own leisure. Overall we really wanted to relate to Ganondagan and to have our audience have a fun, entertaining, yet educational time.

Knowledge Gained:
Through out the 10 weeks of working on this mini site, we were able to learn a lot about design, and the type of audience even a simple color hue can attract. We also gained knowledge about different ways to code the different aspects of our storyteller page. Through many different composition ideas we discovered contrast was key in gaining attention to the main pieces. We used XML so the site would be easily updateable. Also, we learned about a downloadable class movieclip tween that allowed us to have our navigation slide in.

This experience has given us a better knowledge of what we can do and how we can fix what we cannot do. In the end this was a challenge that proved useful to help us learn and hone our skills in New Media.
