Undergraduate Fine Art Photography (BFA)
Program Overview
The Fine Art Photography program prepares you for a career in the fine arts as a visual artist, educator, or freelance artist, or as a professional in fine art-related institutions such as museums, archives, or commercial galleries. A primary goal of the program is to nurture your personal aesthetic vision and its photographic expression. Studying the theoretical and practical skills needed to create thought-provoking and meaningful images will help you both to develop your technical, conceptual and aesthetic abilities, and to further your goals as a contemporary image-maker.
The interdisciplinary curriculum of the program enables you to explore other related fine arts fields such as painting, drawing, sculpture, graphic design, video, film, animation, printmaking and printing, computer graphics and web publishing. You can also take foundation and specialized courses, including digital imaging and workflow, alternative processes, video, new media, history and criticism of photography, and exhibition display and interpretation.
You will have the opportunity to earn credits by enrolling in independent projects or educational internships in galleries, workshops, or other art and imaging centers. You may also choose to spend your third year studying abroad to earn credits in an applicable field. Upon graduation, you will be ready to create or pursue a career in a variety of fine arts fields, commercial photography industries, or print and electronic media businesses.
