Admission to SOFA is very competitive. Normal RIT admission requirements such as rank in class, SAT and essay are the basis for most acceptance.

Portfolio submission is optional. Not all portfolios will be reviewed. While most students are admitted solely from the strength of their normal application materials, a small group of applicants are determined to be "possible accepts" and for that group portfolios are reviewed.
