The School of Photographic Arts and Sciences (SPAS) Gallery is pleased to present Familiar, an exhibition of photography and video by contemporary Turkish artists, including Nancy Atakan, Ozgul Arslan, Ipek Duben, Gul Ilgaz, Iz Oztat, and Rochester Institute of Technology professor, Roberley Bell. Familiar will be presented in SPAS Gallery from Monday, October 29th to Friday, November 16th, 2012. The exhibition’s opening reception will be held in the Gallery from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by an artist talk at 7 p.m. in the Carlson Auditorium, Center for Imaging Science.
The origination of Familiar can be traced to Professor Bell’s 2010 Fulbright Teaching Fellowship in Istanbul, Turkey and her educational and creative collaboration with four of Turkey’s most recognized visual artists. Seizing upon the notion of the familiar in locales near and far, the five artists in this exhibition illuminate the extraordinary in the ordinary and the commonalities shared in their daily encounters and creative experiences. The familiar also points to the close friendships linking these artists through their visual work and global perspective.
Familiar is made possible by a generous donation from the Turkish Cultural Foundation.
