Magnumphotographers gatherforprojectin Rochester, NewYork.

Jim Goldberg, Susan Meiselas, Paolo Pellegrin, Alec Soth, Bruce Gilden, Martin Parr, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Larry Towell, Alex Webb, Donovan Wylie, and Chien-ChiChang to photograph and exhibi tnew work in the hometown of Kodak.

April 2, 2012 [NEW YORK AND ROCHESTER]–  From April 14-29, 2012, ten Magnum photographers will live, work and exhibit together in Rochester, New York. The project, titled House of Pictures, is part of an ongoing series of collaborative attempts to investigate a fragmented and often anxious American landscape. Rochester, with its deep connection to the history of photography, provides a particularly  resonant and meaningful setting.

House of Pictures builds on an earlier project in which Goldberg, Meiselas, Pellegrin and Soth travelled with Mikhael Subotzky and the writer Ginger Strand through the American Southwest last May. Like the first Postcards from America trip (www.postcards.magnumphotos.com,@magnumpostcards), House of Pictures will be presented live onwww.magnumphotos.com and through various social media outlets.

The project has the support of a variety of Rochester cultural institutions. Visual Studies Workshop will serve as the photographers’ home base and an open studio.  Public group presentations are planned for the Rochester Institute of Technology onWednesday, April18, at 8 p.m, and George Eastman House on the afternoon of Saturday, April 28. * Pier 24 in San Francisco is also a coresupporter.

A variety of additional interactions, installations and events will be announced by social media throughout the project’s run, including on the Postcards tumblr; postcardsfromamerica.tumblr.com and twitter; @magnumpostcards. Also magnumphotos.com; @magnumphotos; and Magnum Photos facebook page.  Chien-ChiChang, a Magnum photographer and filmmaker, will be inRochester to document the project itself.

Community interaction and engagement will play a particularly important role. The photographers intend to make open calls for personal stories and photographic materials that can be incorporated in the work in differentways.  In addition to vernacular and historic pictures, the photographers encourage people to post their own photographs of Rochester in the Postcards flickr group, http://www.flickr.com/groups/postcardsfromamerica/.

Magnum Photos is the home of documentary photography.  Founded in 1947 by Henri Cartier- Bresson, Robert Capa, George Rodger and David “Chim” Seymour, it remains owned and cooperatively managed by its independent photographer-members.   www.magnumphotos.com.
